Famous for the sweeping valley views and sulphurous
hot-water springs, the large settlement of Vashisht, formerly known as
Bashist, just 3km from Manali
, is an amorphous jumble of traditional timber houses and modern concrete
cubes, divided by paved courtyards and narrow muddy lanes.
The tranquil and traditional atmosphere of the place is interrupted by
the occasional rave that takes place in the woods or if the weather is
poor.
OTHERS
Hot Bath Complex: Supplied by water piped from the underground
springs, HPTDC's Hot Bath Complex, is the perfect place to soak away the
aches and pains of a long trek or bus journey.
Pyramid Centre: Run by an Italian couple, has small art gallery
offers massage and Reiki and has great little café.
Nembutsu Centre: Situated just above the village, Nembutsu Centre
runs short and long-term Meditation courses.
TEMPLES
Temples: Dedicated to the local patron saint Vashista, who was a
defied sage and guru of Raghunathji, Vashista also boasts with a old stone
temples, opposite each other above the main square. The smaller temple of
the two opens on to a partially covered courtyard, and is adorned with
elaborate wood carvings.
Temple Tanks: The free and communal equivalent of HTPDC's hot
tubs, these temple tanks are divided into separate sections for men and
women and they attract a mixed crowd of Hindu pilgrims.
Road: One can reach Vashisht either by road or along the footpath that winds up from the main highway to its principal attraction.
Vashisht is packed with budget guesthouses and on the outskirts, a couple of hotels offer good value, comfortable rooms.
