Himachal
has dozens of large and small lakes spread over the state. Some are
natural lakes that date back millions of years, others are far more recent
and are man made reservoirs. The most famous reservoir in the state is the
Maharana Pratap Sagar located in district
Kangra. Visit this wildlife
sanctuary, which is a natural habitat of 220 species of birds belonging to
54 families. Another vast reservoir is Gobind
Sagar lying in the districts of Bilaspur
and Una and is famous for fishing of Labeo Dero,
Tor Putitora, Mystus Seenghala and Mirror Carp. Also considered as a
pilgrimage, Renuka Lake lies in the
Sirmour district and is dedicated to goddess Renuka. Just 11-kms from
Dharamsala is located the picturesque Dal Lake,
lying amidst the hills of Dharamsala
and is surrounded by fir trees. It's a centre of attraction during the
annual fair of the Gaddi tribe that is held in the month of September. All
these lakes provide a tremendous range of activity that includes, boating,
swimming, canoeing, water-skiing, kayaking, sailing, surfing and fishing.
