Manimahesh Lake, located at 4,950m above sea level, near the base of a
peak in the Manimahesh range, is the highest hierarchy of sacred waters of
in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba
District.
Held sacred to Lord Shiva this lies in the Budhi valley at the foot of
the Manimahesh ranges. The peak of Manimahesh Kailash is regarded as one
of the mythical abodes of Shiva. This tarn is the venue of the annual
Manimahesh Yatra.
It is a place of pilgrimage and destination for many hardy trekkers.
Thousands including visitors from far-off places, visit the sacred site on
the 8th day of the moon in the month of Bhadon, or the 15th day after
'Janmashtmi', for dip in the holy waters of its glacial lake.
According to the belief, taking dip in the lake washes away the sins and
earns a boon for the remaining life.
Rail: The convenient railhead is Pathankot, which
is linked by direct trains with Amritsar, Jalandhar,
Delhi , Mumbai and
Calcutta.
Road: 122-km from Pathankot, Chamba is connected with an
all-weather road. H.P. Transport Corporation buses operate on the
Chamba-Bharmour route and there is jeep service between Bharmour and
Hardsar. Taxis and jeeps can be hired at Chamba.
Accomodation at Chamba is available in the HPTDC's Hotel
Iravati and in private guest establishments. Tented Accomodation is
provided at Bharmour,
Hardsar, Dhanchho and
Manimahesh.
