It's possible to trek 30-km from Dalhousie to Chamba along
the eastbound road from Gandhi Chowk. A short but steep ascent leads to
the Kalatope wildlife sanctuary, from which one can walk into a pleasant
track.
This sanctuary area with its well-laid out trekking jungle trails both at
Kalatop and Khajjiar is a tourist paradise.
Dense Deodar and Fir forests are places of solitude very close to
Dalhousie town.
The sanctuary is rewarding for the view but its Ibex, deer, bears and
leopards rarely come out of their hiding. Visitors should look for
pheasants and Serow in these forests but should be beware of Black bear,
which can be encountered often in the area.
REQUIREMENT
One has to take the permit to drive into the sanctuary from the Forestery
Department in Chamba.
Air: The airport at Gaggal in
Kangra is at a distance of
18-km.
Rail: The closest railhead is at Pathankot, 120-km away.
Road: Khajjiar is connected by road and is 26-km from
Dalhousie and 24-km from
Chamba. It is 520-km from
Delhi.
